SAN FRANCISCO MAN BECOMES FIRST AMERICAN TO GRASP SIGNIFICANCE OF IRONY Jay Fullmer, 38, yesterday became the first American to get to grips with the concept of irony. “It was weird” Fullmer said. “I was in London and like, talking to this guy and it was raining and he pulled a face and said, “Great weather eh?” and I thought – “Wait a minute, no way is it great weather”. Fullmer then realized that the other man’s ‘mistake’ was in fact deliberate. Fullmer, who is 39 next month and married with two children, aged 8 and 3, plans to use irony himself in future. “I’m, like, using it all the time” he said. “Last weekend I was grilling steaks and I burned them and I said “Hey, great weather.”

There is a real difference with/without using this very understated technique. [this evening I met people, using the BBP and not using it...] There is a real difference I think in the response you received from people you meet when using it but it really must be followed up with a comment or sincere, “very nice to meet you”.

Fran Zone’s Key Advice

2 key points made by Fran Zone (in an audio conference):

1) 80% a first impression based on a visual judgment (not what comes out of a person’s mouth). A person asks themselves: “Why should I listen to this person?”; and so as a corollary, you should focus on what you can convey to them. You should be implicitly saying, “This is why you should care/listen”.

2) Remove “trying” and “dreaming” from your lexicon. If you are “in-progress” to a goal, say what are you doing, and then why. People will remember your action and it will weigh more clearly in their mind. (grasp that you are more do-er than dreamer)
